In her book Sexy But Psycho Dr Jessica Taylor makes it very clear why diagnosing people as mentally ill can be so dangerous, especially for women. The subtitle ‘How the Patriarchy Uses Women’s Trauma Against Them’ says it all: diagnosis is a means to take away power, agency, and choice from women. For me as a person-centred counsellor, Taylor confirms my trust in Carl Rogers’ idea that the client is the expert on their life, not the therapist.
